For this project I chose to look at the beauty of the female form from a modern/alterative prospective using the theme pinup as inspiration.I started by researching lads magazines - mainly looking at the sex appeal within the themed photoshoots! I researched the props and the angles of the women in order to create an erotic feel without the image being vulgar or to exposed! I also researched the way women felt by interviewing models during and after the shoots! I did about 12 shoots in total making sure the models were comfortable 100% during the shoots - each girl I gave a different theme but told them I wanted them to show there personality within the image by there choice of outfit or by using props such as parrasols within the shoot! All the women I choose were completely unique with thier own style but also alternative with piercings and tattoos! They were all unexperienced but great to work with because there was very little pressure! They all had an individual beauty making it easy to have focus points on a particular part of their body or face! I tried to capture the women in locations that would help give an automatic impression on what the model is like! Alot of emotion and trueself can be depicted within the photographs!
I also found inspiration with life drawing! I tried to capture the model from many different angles. I find that life drawing models are comforatble with thier bodys 100% meaning the outcome of the drawn image always has somethig beautiful about it! The curves and the variety of body angles give an automatic womenly feel to the image and Its a pleasure to draw someone with that much confidence! I also made a clay model using the life drawing model as a still life - I moved around her to try and create a 3D effect making sure I got all of her curves and the exact body position! Because I looked at Egon Schiele alot throughout this project I used him as inspiration when it came to the sharp angles of the arms and leg positions of the clay model!
I researched alot of piups throughout the project - This started off as my original idea! I wanted to modernise pinup using alternative women to create a calendar! Pinup being one of the main styles used today in order to bring glamour back! I started by looking at the props used in pinup and the different poses! Im hoping to have captured the feel of pinup however I think the images I took were alot more natural and less posed!
I did a variety of shoots using different settings to create a multiple of themes! The photos are a mixture of vibrant, dark, black and white, over exposed, repeated, layered, natural shots! eg I used the shadows of props to automatically give a dark gothic feel to the image!
My aim of the project was to create an art piece using the images from the different shoots I did aswell As a calandar! I experimented with many different themes, props, and even used my own drawings as part of my work - I thought maybe to have as a frontcover for my calandar - I used photoshop alot within this project, I wish I had more knowledge and experience with using it in order to create better outcomes however Im happy with alot of the images I did! I repeated alot of my paitings and photos creating a poster effect! I also layered alot of my own drawings ontop of photographs! I love the contrast between the two. Some of the images I did didnt quite work with certain photoshoots but there is a group of black and white photos Of myself I did using mainly my facial features as the focus I thought tured out realy well! They were actually my favourite part of the project as I found a beauty within parts of myself I used to flaw! I would have used them as my final piece only didt want to be exposed in the exhibition!
My final outcome wasnt exactly as polished as I wanted it to look but The shoots were all amazing and I learnt alot about beauty during this project! Alot of beauty is held within and with some people can be caught within the flash of a camera! I found the models easy to work with and had alot of fun during the shoots gettig to know thier thoughts and feeling on what true beauty is and what is percieved as beauty by others! Id like to think Ive gave a variety of looks and styles within each photo using different techniques on each month of the calendar! If I would wat to change anything it would just be the size of the images as there printed quite small and I originally planned for the caledar to be A3! I did a side piece using other images I had left over from the project and created a small collage depicting beauty from every angle! I used broken mirrors as a symbol of the the flaws we see everyday as perfection is something people crave and the truth is everybody has perfection if they believe in thierselves! This is why I named this project 'FRACTURES IN THE FACADE OF HER PORCELAIN BEAUTY'
Health and safety - Throughout this project I made sure the models felt safe in the enviroment they were shot and made sure any ladders or props were secure! As this project was mainy photography I made sure the models werent epeleptic and made sure they had breaks during the shoots! Other than that the only other safety precautions were making sure the women werent exposing genitalia or nipples on the photos I choose to use in the exhibition - I also gave the models choice on the photos they wanted me to use! I gave them each a selection of edited and unedited photos and made sure they were happy with them before having them fully exposed as part of my FMP.
